How many of us can remember the bamboo and Tiki bars of the 50s into the early 1960s? Hawaii and other tropical lands were always a popular theme for music, romance and movies depicting the exotic. Many cocktail lounges here in the US had décor themes depicting the exotic isles of Hawaii and Tahiti. The exotic natures of bamboo and grass huts often formed the décor and themes of countless household basement recreation rooms and bars. I played in a few cocktail lounges that were themed with the décor of exotic Hawaii and Tahiti. One man hands down must be recognized as the father of Exotica music and that man is none other than the late Martin Denny. Dennys orchestra and exotic sounds were heard in popular lounges in Hawaii and his hit song Quiet Village epitomized the music of Exotica. Denny was a true musical genius and innovator who knew good music. When he was interviewed a few years before his death in 2005, he commented that he felt there was so much good music that is just being forgotten. How true that is. I have chosen two of Martin Dennys best. Quiet Village is from my 4 track reel-to-reel copy of Exotica played on my Akai 1730D-SS and Martinique from my LP Quiet Village played on my Empire 598 II. The audio results from my digital camera are not the best. My apologies. |

The television show Adventures In Paradise was debut on the ABC television network in the fall season October 5th of 1959 at 9:30pm Monday nights. I remember it well along with other great ABC network shows such as 77 Sunset Strip and Hawaiian Eye. Television in those early days in my opinion was great and early television shows had marvelously written theme music to them. The television show of which was based on the James Mitchner story Adventures In Paradise had beautifully haunting and exotic theme music appropriate for the setting of the story. The music was composed by Lionel Newman and I believe only a genius of Exotica music such as the late Martin Denny could probably render it superbly but I remember the Henry Mancini version of the music which was quite good. Mancini I believe used an electronic amplified harpsichord type instrument for the solo. I bought a book of television show theme music early in the 1960s specifically to learn to play the theme to Adventures In paradise. I played it many times in the various clubs and eateries I was playing at in later years but have not played the piece for many years until youtube user maynardcat posted the clips from the television show. That reminded me of how beautiful that theme music was and so inspired me to try to recreate my old version of it. In listening to this video I made, I feel it is not nearly as good as I remember it flowing from my fingers back in the older days of my playing career but it is what it is. |
