Ah s'io rimiro L'altero lume Per cui sospiro Un fonte, un fiume Io verso intanto D'amaro pianto. Voi fiammeggianti Rubini ardenti Voi lumi santi, Che l'autre, ei venti Rasserenate Ohimè pietate. Né mi consola Sguardo sereno Riso, o parola S'il cor vien meno Miseramente, O cor dolente. O lovely hair, That loose in the breeze Resemble stars Collected in the firmament Of your face, My paradise. You, who binding them Clutch hearts, Have mercy, when you love, If you are beautiful, For mercy still Brings honor to beauty. Ah, if I behold The proud light For which I sigh, I splill all the while A spring, a river, Of bitter tears. You blazing Burning rubies, You, holy lights That gladden Breezes and winds, Alas, have mercy. Nor am I consoled By a serene gaze, Laughter, or word, If my heart faints Miserably, O suffering heart. Scene from Rossini's "Ermione" sung by the great soprano June Anderson This scene was written for the wide ranging Isabella Colbran, and it really shows! The coloratura phrases cross a 2 octave range from B3 to B5 over and over again. And of course June adds interpolated high notes up to full voiced C#6's.

Carmela Remigio, soprano. Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice. Direttore, Giancarlo Andretta. "Al più dolce e caro oggetto", aria di Isabella da L'Inganno Felice, farsa per musica di Giuseppe Foppa, musica di Gioachino Rossini. ISABELLA Al più dolce e caro oggetto io serbava un'alma amante: egli ardea d'eguale affetto, ed in noi regnava amor. Quando un fellon m'invola il cor del mio diletto, e abbandonata e sola mi guida a crudo orror. Che palpito crudele, che pena sento al cor! Ah mi consoli almeno chi prova in seno amor. Beautiful performance by mezzo soprano Joyce di Donato, showing secure low notes as well as secure top C's. From her new album "Colbran, The Muse". Armida is the most difficult role written for Isabella Colbran, it requires a huge range of 2 and a half octaves, incredible coloratura skills and widely shifting tessitura. Since I did the score animation first with Callas who ornaments incredibly, I decided to do one with a performance closer to the score...of course Joyce ornaments as well ans quite wonderfully, but overall is closer to the score...I mean, the aria is pretty difficult as written!

Ok, so it has been posted already...several times...But I wanted to post it with score animation! Yaaaaay. Looking at the score one can get an idea how difficult this role is, it is the most difficult role that Rossini ever wrote and it makes huges demands of its Diva, it needs a true soprano sfogato. Originally written for the great Isabella Colbran who had a huge range, from low G to high E. It is awe inspiring how young Maria not only overcomes the difficulties that Rossini wrote but she completely tosses them off like they are nothing and interpolates high D's, E-flats, takes a 2+ octave chromatic cadenza from middle C to high Db, etc...she is the definition of the ASSOLUTA soprano sfogato voice. I hope you all, as she would say her "dear public" enjoy it :)

Gorgeous scene from Rossini's "Otelo", originally written for the great Isabella Colbran in the role of Desdemona, this role is very comfortable for mezzo soprano truly (not going any higher than high Bb and going down to low Ab, and staying mainly in middle tessitura, unlike other roles written for Colbran like "Armida" which very wild alternations of tessitura from high soprano to contralto). From Cecilia's debut album.
